Today Myrtle Beach, SC is a thriving, world class vacation
destination city located on the eastern seaboard of the United
States. Myrtle Beach is a popular holiday destination for Americans,
Canadians and people from across the world. The 2000 US Census
states that Myrtle Beach is one of the 13 fastest growing metropolitan
areas in the country. Not only are people moving here, but more
and more people are choosing Myrtle Beach as the vacation destination
of choice. As the city grows in popularity, the tourism infrastructure
grows along with it- giving Myrtle Beach vacationers more and
more to explore and enjoy.
The history of Myrtle Beach as a vacation destination dates
back to when a group of Spanish explores from Hispaniola landed
30 miles to the south of modern day Myrtle Beach. Here they
established the first European settlement in the entire country.
San Miguel de Cauldape, as the settlement was christened, didn't
last long. It was abandoned when these same Spanish explorers
returned to Europe a year later.
Still, even after the departure of these Spanish explorers,
the area in and around Myrtle Beach saw a slow and steady increase
in population. While even the earliest visitors and settlers
to this area of South Carolina took stories about the beauty
of the area back to their fellow citizens in Europe and elsewhere,
it wasn't until the early 20th century that people began to
regularly return to Myrtle Beach to vacation here.
The town of Myrtle Beach was first officially established in
1938. The city was named after "wax myrtle" -a plant that is
found in abundance in and around Myrtle Beach. Even then the
city was small and the tourism in the area was almost solely
centered on the natural attractions of the area- namely sand
and surf. Just under 20 years later Myrtle Beach officially
became a city. And it was around this time that tourism in the
area really began to take off. Before long, resorts, hotels,
restaurants, golf courses, live entertainment facilities, and
other holiday attractions were being built throughout the area.
Before long, tourism became one of the top industries in Myrtle
Beach and the surrounding area.
Today Myrtle Beach, South Carolina is a vacation destination
of the highest level. Every year millions of visitors pour into
the area to enjoy all that it has to offer. The Atlantic Ocean
and the spectacular beach front property serve as the main attractions

beginning one hundred years ago. But contemporary Myrtle Beach
